Welcome

Bir Mula Heritage museum is a private family-run initiative. Bought as a future residence, the house was instead converted into a social history museum with the objective of benefitting the community. Between 1996 and 2003, most of the house was restored manually by the Vella family to preserve original features. The house spans over three levels with rumours that there is an underground level. Artefacts found on site indicate that the site was inhabited since Neolithic times and the building has sections which date between the 10th and the 17th century.

The choice of the name ‘Bir Mula’ is intended to remind of the ancient toponym of Bormla which meant ‘harbour of shelter’, indicating that it was the ancient harbour of Malta. The museum intends to preserve ‘common’ life curiosities for future generations, research and pedagogy. The museum is totally maintained and funded by family earnings, visitor donations and fund-raising events organised by the museum itself. Your support is highly appreciated.

Now let’s start the tour of the museum.

We will start from the street facing the museum.
