Interactive Audio / Visual Guide and Information Systems Infoscience.eu has installed an Interactive Audio / Visual Guide at the Birmula Heritage Museum in Bormla. This was developed as an alternative to printing information leaflets on the exhibits and in multiple languages.

Visitors are asked to use their own smart Phone (BYOD – Bring Your Own Device principle). The system offers visitors to the museum a specific Wi-Fi hotspot and visitors are asked to go to a specific web site once they have connected to this Wi-Fi network.

Initially, the visitor is presented with a language selection page. As many languages as necessary can be supported.

Screens with text and photographs on the various exhibits or items of note are presented. The visitor can browse to the next screen / exhibit or return to the previous on. Or select any page from a list. The visitor can click / tap on any of the photos to get a larger, more detailed view. Tapping the large, detailed photo again, returns to the descriptive page. There is also an audio play feature where an audio presentation can be added to each screen to mimic the audio guides found in the larger museums – without the overhead of cleaning and charging them.

With a connection to the internet, the device can also serve as an access point for the public over the internal Wi-Fi network.

Range extenders are used for network coverage over the whole museum.

In order for visitors to have access to the same content outside the museum, the same set up can be published on the internet through the Infoscience.eu website. An example can be found at Bir Mula Heritag Museum Interactive Audio Visual Guide
