The Terrace

The terrace, originally a large room, retains features and cavities for wooden beams and flagstones which once supported the ceiling.

MORE: The chimney was exposed once the double wall was partially dismantled. The single-stone plant pots were added after the remodelling of the storey. The stone with the Ave Maria symbol was removed from the house façade and retained. It formed part of the late 14th or early 15th century one storey façade or an early stone balcony. It shows the Christian symbols attributed to Our Lady: the Ave Maria – Hail Mary - flanked by the lily as a sign of purity, innocence and virginity and the palm representing the warm acceptance of Christ, virtue and source of life, the lady of justice who punishes transgressors. At the top of the design is a monarch’s crown as a symbol of boundary between the terrestrial and the divine. The crown indicates a possible Sicilian or Spanish connection The remodelling converted the house from its earlier Arab design to a ‘palazzino’ with a few touches of the Renaissance style: the decorated arch, painted walls and painted ceilings.
