The Balustrades: The difference in the design of the balusters is witness to two different eras, the lower which resemble two inverted vases are of an early Italian Renaissance style dating to the late 15th century, while the upper simple vase- or pear-shaped are from the 16th or early 17th century. The hand-rest shows graffiti mostly of mediaeval maritime vessels and some early British vessels of the 19th century and an Italian cog vessel from the 14th century.
